burn permits & Open fires

Harpswell allows open burning of clean wood, brush, grass, and leaves in accordance with the Maine Forest Service open burning laws. Fires larger than 36 inches in diameter and ANY fire on an island not accessible by a vehicle must obtain an open burning permit. A free burning permit may be obtained from the Maine.gov web site on the open burning permit page.
