7/31/24 Wildland Fire Certification Day
On June 31, 2024 members of the First Responder Accession Program (FRAP) from the Orr’s &
Bailey Islands Fire Department (OBIFD) and the Harpswell Neck Fire Department (HNFD)
participated in a Wildland Fire Certification Field Day with rangers from the Maine Forest
Service. Assisting were Town Fire Director, Mike Drake, Fire Fighter and EMT, Sean Hall and
Paramedic, Meriel Longley. Wildland fire training takes place yearly and prepares non-
firefighters to become certified in fighting fires in woods and open lands.
Participants practiced digging hand lines, deploying emergency fire shelters, using various
hand tools and operating portable pumps. The certification that was earned will enable
recipients to fight wildland fires in the state of Maine. An additional “pack test” will be
conducted in the fall. Pack test participants must walk (without breaking into a run) 3 miles in
45 minutes carrying a 45 lb. back pack. Passing the pack test will permit recipients to travel
nation-wide when a multi-state response is required.

7/29/23 Community Summer Celebration
On July 29, 2023 the OBIFD held a Summer Celebration for the Harpswell community as a way of giving back to the public for its support. There was a morning fun run where runners followed the new fire truck between the Orr’s and Bailey Island fire stations. This was followed by display of the new fire truck, a barn sale, a silent auction in the old school house, raffles and a car show. There was also food and live music by Rockweed.
